Adding water lowers sodium concentration, but it does not remove sodium from the soup. Your intake falls only if the diluted soup leaves you eating a smaller share of the original batch.
Read the condensed serving first
Campbell’s Tomato Soup lists 480 mg sodium per ½ cup (120 mL) of condensed soup, with about 2.5 servings per container. That is approximately 1,200 mg per can: 480 × 2.5. These are manufacturer-label estimates checked October 14, 2026; your can may differ.
What changes when you add water?
For an illustrative calculation, mix ½ cup condensed soup with ½ cup water that adds negligible sodium. You now have about 1 cup of soup containing the same 480 mg. This is arithmetic, not a measured cooking yield; follow your package’s preparation directions.
| Amount eaten | Estimated sodium |
|---|---|
| ½ cup condensed soup | 480 mg |
| All 1 cup after dilution | 480 mg |
| ½ cup of that diluted soup | 240 mg |
The last row is lower because you ate half the batch, not because water removed salt. Finish the remaining half later and your combined intake returns to 480 mg.
Milk, broth, and toppings change the total
Milk and broth can contribute sodium; check their labels before treating them like water. Cheese and crackers add more. Less salty taste does not establish lower sodium intake, and simmering away water concentrates what remains.
Less sodium per cup is useful only when cup size stays fixed. A larger bowl can cancel that change. Decide your portion before judging the diluted soup by its milder flavor.
Compare the bowl you will actually eat
Check whether each label describes condensed soup, soup as prepared, or ready-to-eat soup. Match the prepared portion before comparing numbers. To reduce intake, choose a lower-sodium product or eat a smaller share; dilution alone does not lower the batch total.
